Camera Operator

The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s

rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among

the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is

located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.

In seeking to achieve these objectives, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among

others, the implementation of new organization structure and the filling of vacant posts.

The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the post of

Camera Operator.


Job Title: Camera Operator

Supervisor: Head of Division Communication

Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia


  • The Camera Operator will be responsible for videography of various television formats and video
  • products as required; the products and formats may include TV news coverage for international and/or local

    distribution, special features, multimedia digital platforms and social media, documentary programmes, dramas,


    public service announcements, b-rolls and conference coverage, depending on the priorities and communication

    strategy elaborated by the Directorate if Information and Communication for the African Union with the view to

    popularize all the activities and programs of the AU ;

  • Identify the appropriate video and audio materials for individual productions, and bear principal
  • responsibility for proper maintenance and storage of such equipment;

  • Work to ensure that the material is professionally packaged, edited and delivered for continuity, logical
  • arrangement and relevance to the target audience;

  • Ensure archiving of all the AU recorded video
  • Setting-up backgrounds and lighting for news events, press conferences, etc.;
  • setting up of high standard editing studio for video footage
  • Facilitating the work of camera operators and producers from broadcast organizations who are covering
  • African Union activities;

  • Assist Video Producer in procurement of camera, sound and lighting equipment, as required;
  • Ensure the aesthetic and technical quality of video and audio materials.
  • Film AU event/ interviews as assigned;
  • Edit video output into short films/ documentaries in different formats;
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with AU broadcast infrastructure and operations;
  • Develop and maintain an effective archiving and retrieval system for AU film and video materials;
  • Perform satellite feeds, technical operations, and systems maintenance;
  • Troubleshoot device, wiring, and system problems and assist in the resolution to any technical
  • difficulties;


  • Artistic ability and creativity: the Cameraman must be able to evaluate the artistic quality of a video.
  • Computer skills: He/she must be familiar with video editing software.
  • Proactive: The camera operator must be able to understand and anticipate the needs of their clients
  • and propose solutions.

  • Detail oriented: He/she must be careful not to overlook details and must be thorough when editing
  • videos.

  • Produce high quality video documentaries
  • Interpersonal skills: He/she must communicate effectively to achieve a certain composition in a video.
  • Fully proficient in the use of professional digital and analog video cameras; deep knowledge of filming
  • and editing;

  • Edit content for social media channels such as YouTube etc..;
  • Substantial and diverse expertise in all areas of video production.
  • proven ability to produce and develop multimedia products;
  • Be up-to-date of the most current and emerging technology, including cameras, editing equipment and
  • software;

    1. Qualifications and Experience Required:

  • Diploma in Film Production, graduate in creative media production & technology, audiovisual studies
  • related fields”;-

  • Expertise and experience in digital video documentary.
  • Experience covering African development issues.
  • Skills to produce field videos in a challenging environment.
  • Mobility and willingness to accept assignments at short notice.
  • At least 3 years of experience in professional video documentary
  • Ability to understand continental development issues
  • Requirements

  • Previous experience taking video documentary in diverse situations and in developing countries an
  • advantage.

  • Linear and non-linear editing experience essential;
  • Final Cut Pro experience would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of, video, audio, lighting, and camera operation for small studios as well as experience in
  • interview lighting and audio (both indoor and outdoor);

  • Working knowledge of broadcast cameras, playback machines and knowledge of digital formats;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a strong work ethic, positive attitude;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and set priorities is a must;
  • Multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity, work ethic, positive attitude and respect for
  • diversity;

    2. Language Requirement:

    Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Proficiency of one or several other working language

    (s) would be an added advantage.

    3. Tenure of Appointment:

    The appointment will be made on fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve

    months be consider as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years

    renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables.

    5. Remuneration:

    Indicative basic salary of US$ 10,435.00 (GSA3 Step 1) per annum plus other related entitlements for locally

    recruited staff of the Commission e.g. dependents (spouse and children) allowance and education allowance

    (75% of tuition and other education related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$
