In partnership with the African Union (AU) — particularly its Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department (PAPS) — NORCAP supports peace initiatives through the Mediation and Dialogue Division (MDD). This division leads efforts in mediation, dialogue, reconciliation, and preventive diplomacy across Africa.


Position Summary

The Senior Mediation & Dialogue Officer will support the AU’s Mediation and Dialogue Division in strengthening peace and reconciliation across the continent. This position requires an experienced professional with expertise in mediation, political analysis, and inclusive dialogue processes.

Reporting to: Head of the Mediation and Dialogue Division
Contract Type: One-year assignment
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Eligibility: Open to nationals of AU member states only


Key Responsibilities

Mediation & Dialogue Support

  • Provide technical expertise on designing and facilitating mediation and dialogue processes.
  • Ensure inclusivity and gender sensitivity in peace initiatives.
  • Support AU Member States in organizing multistakeholder dialogues and reconciliation efforts.
  • Monitor political and regional developments impacting peace processes.

Operational & Advisory Duties

  • Assist AU mediators and field teams during missions and stakeholder engagements.
  • Offer technical input on related topics, including DDR, SSR, election processes, and P/CVE.
  • Facilitate capacity-building and training for national stakeholders and civil society groups.
  • Promote the inclusion of women and youth in peacebuilding efforts.

Knowledge Management & Partnerships

  • Document mediation lessons learned and best practices.
  • Build partnerships with regional and international organizations involved in peace processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Master’s degree in Peace & Security Studies, Conflict Resolution, Political Science, Law, or related fields (Bachelor’s degree with 10 years of experience acceptable).
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of experience in mediation, dialogue, peacebuilding, or political affairs.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with AU or RECs/RMs mediation mechanisms.
  • Skills:
    • Proven expertise in conflict prevention and mediation.
    • Strong understanding of inclusive and gender-sensitive peace processes.
    • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills.
